This May, we enjoyed a lovely couples weekend away at the Cape Arundel Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine. Spring is a lovely time to visit this region. After Mother’s Day, restaurants have reopened, the town is coming alive with spring flowers and the shops are stocked and ready for tourists. It can be a little chilly on the water at the end of April and May, so pack layers for those beach walks, but the beauty of the Maine coastline is such a happy sight!
Here’s a look at the inn and a few snaps from our most recent trip to Kennebunkport…
Arriving at the Inn & Our Oceanview Bungalow Suite
The Cape Arundel Inn is a very special place. The original Main House, named Seacrest, was built in 1895 for a wealthy Ohio family who summered on the Maine coast. It’s old time charm with the big wrap around porch and parlor are nostalgic and the warm fireplace and light and bright interiors are so welcoming. The view from this once “summer cottage” is breathtaking. The ocean is right outside your door or window here and the lawn, porch, and a lot of the rooms have that stunning sea view.
The inn’s restaurant, Ocean, is top notch offering French inspired coastal cuisine. We loved our romantic dinner for two here and every table has that amazing ocean view. My husband and I stayed in a lovely Oceanview Bungalow room in the building right next to the original Main mansion house. Our room had a wonderful walkout balcony and we loved having the ocean right outside our door. The interiors had luxury details including fine linens, bath robes, and towels. Also, our room had a full size Nespresso machine, TV, WiFi, a mini fridge, and a marble bathroom. The gas fireplace was a nice touch since Maine evenings can be a little on the chilly side. It was a beautiful room and we loved our time here.
The Main House & Grounds
The Main House at the inn is lovely and the living room is a great spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or night cap and game by the fireside. The views are amazing and there is ample seating inside, on the porch, and on the lawn. Everyone on staff at the inn is so kind and friendly. We enjoyed having drinks at the bar each night before dinner and chatting it up with the bartender.
On the property, guests can check out bicycles to use during their stay. It’s a short ride into town and Dock Square or you can stay seaside and ride by the ocean every morning which is lovely. Also, we loved lounging in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn before dinner with a sip in hand.
Spring in Kennebunkport
There are plenty of stores open in May in Kennebunkport. Dock Square is a great stop for shopping and restaurants. Plus, I love being there in the morning before everything is open to grab a coffee and walk around the town admiring the storefronts, old buildings, and captain’s homes. Farm + Table in Cape Porpoise just a short drive away is another great shopping stop for kitchen and homewares.
There are a few beaches to visit close to the inn too. One tiny one just down the street. You can just walk over from the inn. Also, Gooch’s Beach and Goose Rocks Beach (our favorite) are a short drive away just under 10 minutes. Goose Rocks is always where we take the family in the summer.
Cape Porpoise is the little village next to Kennebunkport, and is a favorite to walk and visit with some good restaurants, markets, and some wonderful views. It’s so peaceful there.
